Reading
Reading is the key that opens the door to independent learning.
We understand that the ability to read is fundamental to children's development. Reading not only gives access to educational success, it also feeds the imagination and allows children to develop culturally, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Our shared vision is that every child develops an intrinsic motivation to read for pleasure and leaves us with a lifelong love of books.
By the end of Year 6 we intend that all pupils read with confidence, stamina and fluency, can discuss a range of texts and genres using appropriate vocabulary, and carry a true love of reading into their later life.
Reading is taught daily. In Reception and Key Stage 1 this is through phonics and reading practice sessions; from Year 2 upwards children are taught vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and the skills of inference, prediction and summarising through whole class reading.
Our reading culture includes daily story time, our refurbished library, reading with our school pets in Reception, secret reader sessions with parents, visits from Eddie the reading dog, trips to the village library, the Summer Reading Challenge and our annual World Book Day celebrations.
