Learning
Languages
Children learn Spanish from Year 3 to Year 6.
We believe that learning a foreign language brings significant educational, social and cultural benefits. Language lessons develop children's speaking, listening and literacy skills, boost self-esteem and confidence, and offer rich opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Learning another language also promotes intercultural understanding and gives children a new perspective on their own culture and those of others.
The language taught at St Bernadette's is Spanish, with age-appropriate learning for all children from Year 3 to Year 6. We develop four areas: listening and responding, speaking, reading and responding, and writing.
Our aims are to foster an interest in learning other languages, to introduce children to a language in a way that is enjoyable and accessible to all, and to help children understand that language has a structure which differs from one language to another.
