History
Making sense of the world by understanding the past.
History helps children develop a personal history, a sense of place and a set of relationships that provide the starting point for much of their intellectual growth. Children compare and contrast their own histories with those of people separated by time or distance, developing a critical awareness of similarities and differences between people, places and events.
Good history teaching helps pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world, inspires curiosity to know more about the past, and equips children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence and develop judgement.
History is taught in half-termly blocks in most classes. In Upper Key Stage 2 it is taught in week-long blocks so that children can concentrate fully on the progression of skills, knowledge and content.
