Phonics
We teach phonics daily using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme.
We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme. Children begin by hearing and identifying sounds in Nursery, learn single letter sounds in the autumn term of Reception, and build steadily through Reception and Year 1, ready for the statutory phonics screening check at the end of Year 1.
Phonics is taught every day. Children apply their phonics in reading practice sessions twice a week, developing fluency and comprehension alongside decoding. Any child who needs extra help receives targeted support so they keep up rather than catch up later.
Children take home books matched to the sounds they know, along with a sharing book to enjoy together. Reading little and often at home makes an enormous difference.
